GARY MCPHEE IS A BIG tough-looking bloke who loves motorbikes. He looks more like the textbook stereotype for, I don’t know, a bikie gang president! But as I’ve learnt, looks can be very deceiving: Gary is in fact the two-term mayor of Carterton, a small town in the lower North Island. He prides himself on ‘getting stuff done’ and making the changes that were needed in the town. Early in his time in office, he was known on occasion to take the law into his own hands and that earned him the reputation as the ‘Sheriff of Carterton’.

Gary has always been upfront about his mental health issues. He says he’s an open book and everybody in town knows his history. David and I sat down to hear his story, his take on the chemical triggers of his depression, how he knows when he’s headed downhill, and what he has learned about getting well and how to stay well.
